Start from the type of culture: bacteria, yeasts and moulds on plates and in tubes need a natural convection or forced air incubator, cell and tissue culture needs a CO2 incubator, and work at or below room temperature (BOD, stability, 20–25 °C) needs a cooling incubator. Then choose the chamber volume and number of shelves, the temperature uniformity your method or accreditation requires, and whether you need built-in UV or heat sterilization.
