Vortex mixers and rotators
A vortex mixer is the fastest way to bring a single tube, microtube or vial to complete homogeneity — resuspending a pellet, dissolving a reagent, mixing a sample before pipetting. Rotators and roller mixers do the opposite job: slow, continuous, gentle movement that keeps a suspension from settling. This subcategory holds VOMI25 in analogue and digital versions, the VOMI50 multi-tube vortexer, the VOMI55 microplate mixer and the ROMIX70 blood roller mixer.
- Single tube or many — VOMI25 in analogue and digital versions handles one tube at a time; VOMI50 is a multi-tube vortexer running 500–2500 rpm.
- Touch or continuous — press the tube down for a burst, or switch to continuous running for unattended mixing.
- Adapters — multi-tube heads, microplate holders and foam racks turn a single-tube vortex into a batch instrument.
- Roller mixers — ROMIX70 rotates blood tubes slowly and continuously so cells stay in suspension without haemolysis.
- Orbit and speed — a tight orbit at high speed creates the vortex; a wide orbit at low speed is gentle mixing, not vortexing.
Vortex when you need the sample mixed now and shear is not a problem. Roller or rotator when the sample must stay homogeneous over time and must not be damaged — whole blood is the classic case. If the mixing also has to happen at a set temperature, the instrument you want is a dry-block thermo shaker, not a vortex.
