Microplate thermostatic shakers

A microplate thermostatic shaker holds the plate at a set temperature and mixes it with a small orbit — the two conditions an ELISA protocol, an enzymatic reaction or a screening assay needs at the same time. Without temperature control the reaction drifts; without even shaking the outer wells read differently from the centre. This subcategory holds the MTP Series and the MTS200/400.

What decides the choice
  • Plate formats — 96- and 384-well plates, deep-well blocks, PCR plates and standard ELISA plates; some models take two plates at once.
  • Temperature range — MTP Series covers RT+5 °C to 80 °C, MTS200/400 covers RT+5 °C to 70 °C.
  • Orbit — a small orbit (about 2 mm) keeps liquid inside the wells while still mixing the whole plate evenly.
  • Speed range — low enough for cell-based assays, high enough for reagent mixing — set independently of temperature.
  • Uniformity — every well sees the same movement, which is what makes an ELISA reading reproducible across the plate.
Plate shaker or block shaker?

If the sample lives in tubes, a dry-block thermo shaker is the right instrument. Choose a microplate thermostatic shaker when the assay format is a plate and the incubation has to run at a controlled temperature — typically 37 °C — for a defined time. For plate mixing at room temperature only, an orbital microplate mixer is enough and costs less.
