LEGEND-PMT double beam UV/Vis spectrophotometer with PMT detector — 190–900 nm

The LEGEND-PMT double beam UV/Vis spectrophotometer combines a reference-beam optical system with a photomultiplier tube (PMT) detector. It covers 190–900 nm, scans at up to 3000 nm/min and is available in three versions — spectral bandwidth 2 nm, 1 nm or selectable 0.5 / 1 / 2 / 4 / 5 nm — for laboratories that need high sensitivity, a stable baseline and reliable readings at high absorbance.

Which UV/Vis spectrophotometer?

Single and split beam — routine Vis and UV/Vis

Double beam, variable bandwidth and PMT

Double beam optics and photomultiplier detection

A double beam UV/Vis spectrophotometer measures the sample and the reference at the same time, so lamp drift does not show up in the result: LEGEND-PMT keeps the baseline flat to ±0.001 A and stable to ±0.0005 A per hour. The PMT detector amplifies the light signal inside the tube — noise is only 0.0005 A at 500 nm, stray light ≤0.03 %T at 220 and 360 nm. That combination is what methods in the deep UV, at narrow slits and with strongly absorbing samples need.

Why a UV/Vis spectrophotometer with a PMT detector

In a photomultiplier tube, light striking the photocathode releases electrons that are multiplied along a chain of dynodes — the signal is amplified inside the detector, before any electronics. A silicon photodiode has no such gain. The difference shows whenever little light reaches the detector: dense or strongly absorbing samples, the deep UV near 190–230 nm where lamp energy is lowest, and narrow slits of 1 nm or 0.5 nm.

The PMT is optimised for the UV and visible range, which is why LEGEND-PMT covers 190–900 nm. For measurements in the near-infrared up to 1100 nm, choose a model with a silicon photodiode — LEGEND, NOVEL-900 or MAVRICA-T — from the menu above.
