NOVEL-800 UV-Vis spectrophotometer with low stray light — double beam, 190–1100 nm, 2 nm
The NOVEL-800 UV-Vis spectrophotometer with low stray light is a double beam instrument for 190–1100 nm with a spectral bandwidth of 2 nm. Its Czerny-Turner monochromator with a 1600 lines/mm grating and 200 mm focal length keeps stray light at ≤0.02 %T and the baseline within ±0.0008 A; deuterium and tungsten lamps, automatic wavelength setting and the 8″ colour touch screen complete the instrument.
Which UV/Vis spectrophotometer?
Vis — teaching and routine
Single and split beam — routine Vis and UV/Vis
Double beam, variable bandwidth and PMT
Why stray light and baseline matter
Stray light is light of other wavelengths that reaches the detector. It sets the upper limit of absorbance that can still be measured linearly and is most noticeable in the UV and with strongly absorbing samples. The NOVEL-800 keeps it at ≤0.02 %T at 220 nm and 360 nm, and its double beam optics hold the baseline within ±0.0008 A across 200–1090 nm — useful for high absorbance values, weak signals and long spectral scans.

Why a UV-Vis spectrophotometer with low stray light
A longer focal length and a finer grating separate the wavelengths more cleanly, so less unwanted light passes the monochromator. In practice the calibration curve stays linear to higher absorbance, small peaks next to strong bands are easier to read and the spectrum is less flattened at the edges of the range. Combined with double beam compensation of lamp fluctuations, the NOVEL-800 is suited to methods where both accuracy at high absorbance and a stable baseline count.
For a lower-priced double beam instrument choose the NOVEL-102S; for selectable bandwidth from 0.5 to 5 nm and stray light ≤0.01 %T choose the NOVEL-900.
Cell holders and sample handling
The NOVEL-800 measures 10 mm cuvettes in a single cell holder in the sample beam; quartz cuvettes are used for the UV range, glass cuvettes for the visible range. 2 quartz and 4 glass cuvettes are included. For low concentrations, cell holders for 50 mm and 100 mm path length are available as options.

Operation and data

The NOVEL-800 is operated from an 8 inch touch screen: wavelength, method and units are set on the screen; spectra, regression curves and kinetic plots are shown while the measurement runs. Zero and 100 %T are adjusted automatically, and concentration is read directly or from a linear regression.
Results, spectra, regression equations and correction data are kept in the internal memory, so the instrument starts quickly. The deuterium and tungsten lamps can be switched separately to extend their life. Via USB the NOVEL-800 connects to a PC; a thermal printer and the COLO spectrum PC software are available as options.
