NOVEL-900 high resolution UV-Vis spectrophotometer — double beam, 190–1100 nm, 0.5–5 nm

The NOVEL-900 high resolution UV-Vis spectrophotometer is a double beam instrument for 190–1100 nm with five selectable spectral bandwidths: 0.5, 1, 2, 4 and 5 nm. Its Czerny-Turner monochromator with a 1600 lines/mm grating and 200 mm focal length keeps stray light at ≤0.02 %T and the baseline within ±0.0008 A; deuterium and tungsten lamps, automatic wavelength setting and the 8″ colour touch screen complete the instrument.

What the spectral bandwidth changes

The spectral bandwidth is the width of the wavelength band that passes the monochromator. A narrow band of 0.5 or 1 nm separates close and narrow absorption peaks and gives true peak heights; a wider band of 4 or 5 nm lets more light through, which lowers noise with weak, dense or turbid samples. The NOVEL-900 switches between 0.5, 1, 2, 4 and 5 nm on the touch screen, so one double beam instrument covers both resolution work and routine measurements.

Why a high resolution UV-Vis spectrophotometer

Many methods state the bandwidth they need: pharmacopoeia resolution checks with toluene in hexane, spectra of benzene-type compounds, rare-earth or holmium bands and derivative spectra need 1 nm or less, while concentration methods in water or food work well at 2 nm and above. With a fixed 2 nm instrument narrow peaks are broadened and their height drops; the NOVEL-900 lets you choose 0.5 nm for such spectra and return to 2–5 nm for routine work, with the same stray light (≤0.02 %T) and baseline (≤±0.0008 A).

For low stray light at a fixed 2 nm and a lower price choose the NOVEL-800; for an entry-level double beam instrument the NOVEL-102S.

Cell holders and sample handling

The NOVEL-900 measures 10 mm cuvettes in a single cell holder in the sample beam; quartz cuvettes are used for the UV range, glass cuvettes for the visible range. 2 quartz and 4 glass cuvettes are included. For low concentrations, cell holders for 50 mm and 100 mm path length are available as options.

Operation and data

NOVEL-900 high resolution UV-Vis spectrophotometer

The NOVEL-900 is operated from an 8 inch touch screen: wavelength, method and units are set on the screen; spectra, regression curves and kinetic plots are shown while the measurement runs. Zero and 100 %T are adjusted automatically, and concentration is read directly or from a linear regression.

Results, spectra, regression equations and correction data are kept in the internal memory, so the instrument starts quickly. The deuterium and tungsten lamps can be switched separately to extend their life. Via USB the NOVEL-900 connects to a PC; a thermal printer and the COLO spectrum PC software are available as options.

Standard delivery
