pH Electrode Care & Maintenance

Proper electrode care is one of the most important factors for accurate and reproducible pH measurements. Even a high-quality benchtop pH meter like the VIKING-PH200 will underperform if the electrode is poorly maintained. Following a few simple routines will significantly extend electrode lifespan and keep your readings reliable.

Storage

Always store the pH electrode in 3 M KCl storage solution — never in distilled or deionised water. Dry storage permanently damages the glass membrane and reference junction, leading to slow response and drifting readings.

Rinsing & Cleaning

Rinse the electrode with distilled water between samples and gently blot dry with lint-free tissue — do not rub. For stubborn contamination (proteins, fats, heavy metals), use an appropriate electrode cleaning solution before rinsing.

Calibration Frequency

Calibrate before each measurement session using fresh NIST buffer solutions. The VIKING-PH200 supports 1–3 point calibration with automatic buffer recognition. Always use buffers that bracket the expected sample pH range for best accuracy.

Tip: If the electrode shows slow response, unstable readings or fails calibration, condition it by soaking in 3 M KCl for 30–60 minutes before use. If the problem persists, the electrode may need replacement — COLO.Science can advise on compatible electrodes for the VIKING-PH200.
