LB Broth Lennox – lysogeny broth with low salt
LB Broth Lennox is a lysogeny broth with a reduced salt content for the growth of E. coli in molecular biology. The lower salt level is preferred for salt-sensitive antibiotics used for plasmid selection.

How LB Broth Lennox works
Tryptone and yeast extract supply amino acids, vitamins and growth factors, and sodium chloride is reduced compared with the Miller formulation. Antibiotics are added after autoclaving and cooling.
Applications and practical notes
Molecular biology and research laboratories use defined, rich media to grow recombinant E. coli, to produce plasmids and proteins, and to cultivate special organisms such as cyanobacteria. Typical applications include:

Working with LB Broth Lennox: Add selection antibiotics only to the cooled broth below 50 °C and use the medium within a few weeks.
Good practice with dehydrated media: keep the bottle tightly closed in a cool, dry place, weigh the powder quickly to avoid moisture uptake, and use fresh distilled or deionised water. Check the pH of each new batch after preparation and before use, and label prepared media with the date. Performance of each lot can be verified with reference strains according to ISO 11133, the standard for the preparation, production, storage and performance testing of culture media.
