How Lauryl Sulfate Tryptone Broth works
Tryptone and lactose support the growth of coliform bacteria, while sodium lauryl sulfate suppresses Gram-positive organisms such as staphylococci. Turbid tubes are subcultured to selective agars or confirmation broths according to the method used.
Applications and practical notes
In the multiple-tube (MPN) method for coliforms and E. coli, as described in FDA BAM Chapter 4 and ISO 4831, a presumptive broth is followed by confirmation broths. Typical applications include:
