D/E Neutralizing Agar (Dey-Engley) is used for the environmental monitoring of micro-organisms on surfaces after chemical disinfection, for example with contact plates.

How D/E Neutralizing Agar works
The neutralisers in the medium inactivate residues of common disinfectants, such as quaternary ammonium compounds, phenolics, iodine, chlorine and aldehydes, so that surviving micro-organisms can grow and be counted.

Working with D/E Neutralizing Agar: Take samples after the contact time of the disinfectant has passed and incubate the plates as required by your monitoring plan.
Good practice with dehydrated media: keep the bottle tightly closed in a cool, dry place, weigh the powder quickly to avoid moisture uptake, and use fresh distilled or deionised water. Check the pH of each new batch after preparation and before use, and label prepared media with the date.
