Campylobacter Latex Kit – rapid confirmation of colonies

The Campylobacter Latex Kit is a slide agglutination test for the rapid confirmation of thermotolerant Campylobacter such as C. jejuni and C. coli from colonies on selective agar.

  • Slide agglutination
  • Result within minutes
  • 50 tests

How Campylobacter Latex Kit works

Latex particles coated with antibodies against Campylobacter antigens react with an extract or suspension of the colony. Visible agglutination with the test latex and none with the control latex indicates a positive result.

Typical results

Result Read-out
Positive Agglutination with test latex, none with control latex
Negative No agglutination

Applications and practical notes

Campylobacter is the most frequently reported cause of bacterial gastroenteritis in Europe and is tested in poultry, meat, milk and water according to ISO 10272-1. Typical applications include:

  • Poultry meat and carcass rinses
  • Raw milk and dairy products
  • Drinking and surface water
  • Environmental and faecal samples

Working with Campylobacter Latex Kit: Use fresh colonies from mCCD or Skirrow agar and always test the control latex in parallel to exclude non-specific clumping.

Good practice with rapid tests: store the kit as stated on the label, let the components reach room temperature before use and use each item only once. Record the lot number and the result, and confirm positive results according to the reference method when this is required.

About the Campylobacter method: ISO 10272-1 describes the detection of thermotolerant Campylobacter in food and feed. Samples with low numbers and stressed cells are enriched in Bolton broth, samples with high background flora in Preston broth. Enrichment cultures are plated on mCCD agar and a second selective agar of the laboratory’s choice and incubated microaerobically at 41.5 °C. Typical colonies are confirmed by morphology, motility, oxidase and further tests. COLO.Science offers supplements, media and latex kits for these steps.
