How Burkholderia cepacia Selective Agar Supplement works
Burkholderia cepacia complex bacteria are naturally resistant to polymyxin B and gentamicin, while these antibiotics and vancomycin suppress most other bacteria. On BCSA, colonies of the complex change the colour of the phenol red indicator.

Applications and practical notes
Burkholderia species contaminate pharmaceutical water and non-sterile products (B. cepacia complex, USP <60>) and fermented foods (B. gladioli). Typical applications include:

Working with Burkholderia cepacia Selective Agar Supplement: Dissolve the vial in 1 mL of sterile saline and add it to 200 mL of autoclaved BCSA base cooled to about 50 °C.
Good practice with media and supplements: keep the bottle tightly closed in a cool, dry place, weigh the powder quickly to avoid moisture uptake, and use fresh distilled or deionised water. Check the pH of each new batch after preparation and before use, and label prepared media with the date. Performance of each lot can be verified with reference strains according to ISO 11133, the standard for the preparation, production, storage and performance testing of culture media.
