How Peptone works
Peptones provide the nitrogen, peptides and amino acids that micro-organisms use for growth. The type of protein and of digestion determines the composition and performance.
Peptone fermentation grade for bulk media: peptone fermentation grade is intended for larger volumes of culture media and for fermentation and bioprocess broths, where a consistent nitrogen source in bulk quantities is needed. In such media, peptone fermentation grade supplies total and amino nitrogen for bacteria, yeasts and moulds and is usually combined with yeast extract, glucose and mineral salts. Each new lot of peptone fermentation grade should be checked in the final medium with the production or reference strains. Peptone fermentation grade is supplied in a 10 kg pack; please ask us for the specification of the current lot of peptone fermentation grade.

Applications and practical notes

Working with Peptone: Keep the container tightly closed to prevent caking, and verify each new lot in your own media.
Good practice with media and supplements: keep the bottle tightly closed in a cool, dry place, weigh the powder quickly to avoid moisture uptake, and use fresh distilled or deionised water. Check the pH of each new batch after preparation and before use, and label prepared media with the date. Performance of each lot can be verified with reference strains according to ISO 11133, the standard for the preparation, production, storage and performance testing of culture media.
About culture media raw materials: the performance of a culture medium depends on the quality and consistency of its ingredients – peptones and extracts provide nitrogen, vitamins and growth factors, agar the gel, and bile salts or deoxycholate the selectivity.
