Biological Safety Cabinets – Protecting You and Your Samples

Biological safety cabinets (BSCs), also known as biosafety cabinets or microbiological safety cabinets, are the primary containment devices for working with infectious agents, cell cultures, and other hazardous biological materials. They provide simultaneous protection for the operator, the product (samples), and the environment through a combination of HEPA/ULPA filtration and directional airflow.

BSCs are essential in clinical, research, and pharmaceutical laboratories where safe handling of pathogens, human cell lines, or volatile toxic chemicals is required. They are classified into three main classes (I, II, III) based on the level of protection and airflow design. Class II cabinets, the most common type, are further divided into Type A2 and Type B2 (hard-ducted) configurations.

All COLO.Science biosafety cabinets are factory-tested and comply with international standards such as NSF/ANSI 49, EN 12469, or ISO 14644. They feature microprocessor controls, real-time airflow monitoring, and energy‑efficient DC motors.

CATEGORY STRUCTURE (NAVIGATION HUB)

BIOSAFETY CABINET CLASSES

  • Class I Biosafety Cabinets – Provide personnel and environmental protection but no product protection. HEPA-filtered exhaust air, but room air flows across the work surface. Used for enclosures for equipment or procedures that generate aerosols (e.g., centrifuges, homogenizers).
  • Class II Biosafety Cabinets – The most common type, offering personnel, product, and environmental protection. HEPA‑filtered downward airflow creates a clean work zone. Subtypes:
    • Type A2 – 70% recirculated, 30% exhausted back into the room (or via thimble connection). Suitable for work with low to moderate risk agents in the absence of volatile toxic chemicals.
    • Type B2 (100% exhaust) – Total exhaust to the outside via hard ducting. Required for work with volatile toxic chemicals or radionuclides.
  • Class III Biosafety Cabinets (Glove Boxes) – Gas‑tight enclosures with attached gloves, providing maximum containment for high‑risk (Biosafety Level 4) agents. Supply and exhaust air are HEPA‑filtered, and exhaust is double‑HEPA‑filtered.

FEATURED: CLASS II TYPE A2 BIOSAFETY CABINETS

Our Class II Type A2 cabinets are the workhorses of microbiological laboratories. They feature a stainless steel work surface, sloped front for ergonomic comfort, and a microprocessor control system with real‑time digital display of airflow and filter status. Available in standard widths (3ft, 4ft, 5ft, 6ft) to suit any lab layout. Ideal for cell culture, clinical microbiology, and non‑volatile chemical applications.

FEATURED: CLASS II TYPE B2 (100% EXHAUST) CABINETS

For laboratories handling volatile toxic chemicals or radioisotopes in addition to biological agents, our Type B2 cabinets provide total exhaust to the outside. They are hard‑ducted to the building exhaust system and maintain negative pressure around all contaminated areas. Equipped with dual HEPA filters and automatic airflow compensation for duct variations.

Typical Applications

  • Cell and tissue culture
  • Microbiological sample handling (bacteria, viruses, fungi)
  • Preparation of chemotherapeutic drugs (cytotoxic agents)
  • Virology and vaccine development
  • Clinical and diagnostic laboratories
