Enterobacteriaceae Identification Kit – biochemical identification of Gram-negative enteric bacteria
The Enterobacteriaceae Identification Kit identifies Gram-negative, oxidase-negative enteric bacteria from pure colonies with a microplate of miniaturised biochemical tests. Results are read against a colour chart and interpreted with the identification table or software.
- Microplate of biochemical tests
- Identification to species level
- 5 tests
How Enterobacteriaceae Identification Kit works
A pure colony is suspended to 0.5 McFarland and 150 µL are dispensed into each well. After incubation, colour changes of the substrates and indicators are scored as positive or negative, and the resulting profile identifies the organism.

Applications and practical notes
Enterobacteriaceae are counted as hygiene indicators according to ISO 21528-2 and differentiated with classic biochemical media. Typical applications include:
- Food and feed hygiene control
- Differentiation of Gram-negative isolates
- Pharmaceutical non-sterile products
- Training and reference laboratories
Working with Enterobacteriaceae Identification Kit: Use only pure single colonies, overlay the wells marked for paraffin and add the reagents only after incubation.
Good practice with rapid tests: store the kit as stated on the label, let the components reach room temperature before use and use each item only once. Record the lot number and the result, and confirm positive results according to the reference method when this is required.
About the Enterobacteriaceae methods: Enterobacteriaceae are hygiene indicators in food and feed. ISO 21528-2 counts them on Violet Red Bile Glucose Agar, and ISO 21528-1 detects them after enrichment in Enterobacteria Enrichment Broth Mossel. Typical colonies are confirmed as oxidase-negative and glucose-fermenting. The European Pharmacopoeia and USP use the same broth and agar for bile-tolerant Gram-negative bacteria in non-sterile products. Kligler Iron Agar, Simmons Citrate Agar and identification kits are used to differentiate isolates. COLO.Science offers media, identification kits and QC strains for these steps.
