Salmonella Detection Plate – ready-to-use plate for Salmonella screening
The Salmonella Detection Plate is a ready-to-use dry film plate for the detection of Salmonella in food and beverages after enrichment. Suspect colonies are recognised by colour and can be confirmed on the same plate with the Salmonella Confirmation Plate.
- No media preparation – ready-to-use plates
- Suspect Salmonella: red to red-brown colonies with a yellow halo
- Pack of 20 plates · COLO code PRO7369
How the Salmonella Detection Plate works
The plate contains selective nutrients, a cold-water-soluble gelling agent and indicators. After enrichment, a loopful of culture is streaked onto the plate and 1 mL of sterile water is added. During incubation Salmonella forms red to red-brown colonies surrounded by a yellow acid zone, while most other bacteria grow green or without a zone.
Reading the result
| Result | Reading |
| Suspect Salmonella | red to red-brown colonies with a yellow halo |
| Other bacteria | green colonies or colonies without a halo |
Suspect colonies are confirmed with the Salmonella Confirmation Plate or by the culture method.

Applications and practical notes
The Salmonella Detection Plate is used for fast routine screening of food and beverage samples, as an alternative to plating on selective agars. Typical applications include:
- routine screening of food and beverages
- raw material and finished product control
- hygiene monitoring in food production
- laboratories with high sample numbers
Working with Salmonella Detection Plate: Streak the enrichment culture evenly and add the sterile water gently so that it spreads over the whole growth area. Incubate the plates face up and do not stack more than 20 plates.
Good practice with rapid tests: store the kit as stated on the label, let the components reach room temperature before use and use each item only once. Record the lot number and the result, and confirm positive results according to the reference method when this is required.
About the Salmonella culture method: the reference method for Salmonella in the food chain, ISO 6579-1, has four steps: non-selective pre-enrichment, selective enrichment in two broths, plating on two selective agars and confirmation of typical colonies. The FDA BAM Chapter 5 follows the same principle with media adapted to different food types. Rapid tests and identification kits shorten the time to result, but positive screening results are usually confirmed by the culture method. COLO.Science offers products for every step, so that one supplier covers the whole procedure.
