ROMI100 rotary tube mixer — 360° rotation + vibration, 0–200 rpm, 9 + 2 programs

The ROMI100 is a programmable rotary tube mixer for keeping biological samples in suspension. Tubes are clamped on a horizontal rotating shaft and turned end-over-end through 360°; a vibration (reciprocal swing) can be added at any angle from 0 to 360°, adjusted analogically to the protocol. A microprocessor-controlled DC motor, keypad operation and an LCD showing time and speed in real time make it a simple bench instrument with 9 preset and 2 user programs. Product code PRO7310.

End-over-end rotation and vibration on one shaft

A rotary tube mixer is chosen when particles, cells or beads must stay in suspension in closed tubes over time, without energetic mixing. The ROMI100 combines two motions on one horizontal shaft: the shaft turns the clamped tubes end-over-end through 360°, and a vibration (reciprocal swing) can be added at any angle from 0 to 360°. Turning the tube end-over-end moves the whole liquid column and the air bubble through the sample; the added vibration at a set angle gives a stronger, local agitation when the protocol needs it.

Why a rotary tube mixer and not a roller mixer or vortex

A rotary tube mixer turns a closed tube end-over-end, so the whole liquid column and the air bubble travel through the sample on every turn. That keeps blood with anticoagulant homogeneous and keeps latex particles and magnetic beads evenly distributed during incubation and immunoprecipitation — without the energetic mixing that would damage the sample. Because the programs repeat the same sequence run after run, the motion a sample receives is the same in every cycle.

The ROMI100 rotary tube mixer adds a vibration at a set angle for protocols that need a stronger, local agitation in addition to rotation. Where tubes or bottles are to be rolled lying flat, a roller mixer is the alternative; where a single tube has to be homogenised immediately, a vortex mixer is faster. A rotary tube mixer is the right answer when particles, cells or beads must stay in suspension in closed tubes over time.

Operating functions

Rotation and vibration

The horizontal shaft turns the clamped tubes end-over-end through 360°. A vibration (reciprocal swing) can be added at any angle from 0 to 360°; the angle is adjusted analogically to the protocol, and vibration time and vibration speed are adjustable. Rotation and vibration can be combined in programs, so a run can alternate gentle end-over-end turning with a short, stronger local agitation.

Programs, speed and time

Nine preset programs cover rotation and vibration, and two user programs hold the laboratory’s own sequences; each program has seven editable steps. Speed runs from 0 to 200 rpm and is shown on the LCD; on request, the working speed range can be fixed within 0–200 rpm to the customer’s requirement. The timer covers 1 minute to 99 hours 59 minutes and gives a beep at the end, or the instrument runs continuously when the timer is set to 0.

Loading the shaft

Tubes are clamped on the horizontal rotating shaft in interchangeable trays for 1.5/2.0 ml, 10/15 ml and 50 ml tubes. The standard mixed tray takes 4 × 50 ml + 4 × 15 ml + 16 × 1.5/2.0 ml in one run; optional trays take 22 × 10/15 ml, 12 × 10/15 ml, 12 × 50 ml or 36 × 1.5/2.0 ml when a run uses a single tube format.

Drive, power and build

Inside the ROMI100 rotary tube mixer the drive is a DC motor with microprocessor control. Operation is by keypad, and the LCD shows time and speed in real time, so the operator reads the running state at a glance without opening a menu.

The control unit with the LCD sits on the left, next to the horizontal rotating shaft with the tube holders. The instrument takes a 12 V DC input and draws 12 W; it is supplied with a 100–240 V, 50/60 Hz mains adapter, and an optional 12 V alkaline battery pack takes over automatically if mains power fails. It measures 440 × 135 × 280 mm and weighs 2.0 kg, compact enough for a crowded clinical or research bench.

Applications and operational value

On clinical benches the ROMI100 rotary tube mixer keeps blood with anticoagulant homogeneous. Turning the closed tube end-over-end moves the whole liquid column through the sample, so the anticoagulant stays evenly distributed and the cells stay in suspension while the tube waits to be processed. With continuous operation (timer set to 0) the tubes stay in motion for as long as needed.

In latex diagnostics, immunoprecipitation and magnetic-bead (immunomagnetic) separation workflows, the particles or beads must stay evenly distributed during incubation. A rotary tube mixer does exactly that, and the added vibration at a set angle gives a stronger, local agitation when the protocol needs it. The 9 preset and 2 user programs, with 7 editable steps each, repeat the same sequence run after run, so an incubation is reproducible from one batch to the next.

For general gentle tube mixing on research benches, the interchangeable trays decide throughput: the standard mixed tray takes three tube formats at once, while the optional single-format trays take up to 36 × 1.5/2.0 ml, 22 × 10/15 ml or 12 × 50 ml tubes in one run.

Selection guide

  • Tube format and count. Count the tubes per run and their format; choose the standard mixed tray or an optional single-format tray for 1.5/2.0 ml, 10/15 ml or 50 ml tubes.
  • Speed range. The instrument covers 0–200 rpm; if the protocol requires it, the working range can be fixed to the customer’s requirement.
  • Vibration. If particles or beads need a stronger, local agitation in addition to rotation, use the vibration at a set angle; plain end-over-end rotation is enough for keeping samples in suspension.
  • Duration. A defined incubation uses the timer, from 1 minute to 99 h 59 min; samples that must stay in motion until collected use continuous operation.
  • Temperature. If the protocol prescribes a temperature, a rotary mixer is the wrong instrument — choose a thermo shaker or shaking incubator instead.
  • Tube position and speed of mixing. Tubes or bottles rolled lying flat belong on a roller mixer; a single tube homogenised immediately belongs on a vortex mixer.
