How Yeast Extract works
Yeast extract supplies vitamins and growth factors that many bacteria, yeasts and lactic acid bacteria cannot synthesise, which makes media more productive.

Working with Yeast Extract: Weigh the powder quickly and close the container immediately, because yeast extract is hygroscopic.
Good practice with media and supplements: keep the bottle tightly closed in a cool, dry place, weigh the powder quickly to avoid moisture uptake, and use fresh distilled or deionised water. Check the pH of each new batch after preparation and before use, and label prepared media with the date.
