Phosphate Buffer pH 7.2 – neutral diluent for microbial testing
Phosphate Buffer pH 7.2 is a neutral diluent for the preparation of samples and dilution series in pharmaceutical, cosmetic, food and water testing. It keeps the pH stable, so bacteria survive the time between dilution and plating.

How Phosphate Buffer pH 7.2 works
Potassium and sodium phosphates buffer the diluent at pH 7.2. Each lot is tested so that the counts of E. coli and S. aureus change by no more than ±50 % after 45 minutes in the buffer.

Applications and practical notes
Diluents and simple peptone media are used to prepare samples and dilution series without harming the bacteria, and as base media for classic biochemical tests described for example in the FDA Bacteriological Analytical Manual. Typical applications include:
