Nutrient Broth – basic broth for cultivation and revival
Nutrient Broth is the liquid version of Nutrient Agar. It is used for the cultivation and revival of non-fastidious bacteria, for preparing inocula and in qualitative tests of disinfectant efficacy.

How Nutrient Broth works
Peptone and beef extract supply nitrogen, vitamins and minerals. Growth is seen as turbidity or as flakes in the broth after 24 hours at 35–37 °C, and the culture can then be streaked on agar or used as an inoculum.

Applications and practical notes
General-purpose media are the basic tools of every microbiology laboratory. They grow a wide range of non-fastidious bacteria and are used for revival of cultures, purity checks and the maintenance of reference strains, whose performance is verified according to ISO 11133. Working with Nutrient Broth: Dispense the broth into tubes before autoclaving and check sterility of a few tubes by incubation before use.
Good practice with dehydrated media: keep the bottle tightly closed in a cool, dry place, weigh the powder quickly to avoid moisture uptake, and use fresh distilled or deionised water. Check the pH of each new batch after preparation and before use, and label prepared media with the date. Performance of each lot can be verified with reference strains according to ISO 11133, the standard for the preparation, production, storage and performance testing of culture media.
