Why a hotplate magnetic stirrer with a brushless DC drive

A hotplate magnetic stirrer heats the vessel from below while a rotating magnetic field turns the stirring bar in the liquid, so the heat that enters through the bottom of the vessel is distributed through the whole volume. For larger vessels, two things matter: a plate big enough to carry the vessel base, and a drive strong enough to keep the bar coupled at volume. The MAGD5 offers a Ø175 mm plate and a brushless DC motor that stirs up to 10 L.

The 800 W heater brings larger volumes up to temperature faster, and the digital controller holds the plate within ±1 °C up to 250 °C. Speed and temperature are set and read independently, the timer ends a step after 1–250 min, and the residual heat warning shows when the plate is still hot. That makes the MAGD5 a practical bench instrument for routine heating and stirring in research, QC and teaching laboratories.

Operating functions

Heating and temperature

The 800 W heater under the stainless steel plate heats from room temperature up to 250 °C, and the digital controller holds the set temperature with ±1 °C accuracy. Temperature is set and read independently of the stirring speed, so the same instrument serves quick dissolution and longer heated steps.

Stirring and timer

The brushless DC motor turns the stirring bar at 0–1500 rpm and stirs up to 10 L of water. The drive has no brushes to wear, so it runs quietly and needs no maintenance. The timer limits a heating or stirring step to 1–250 min, so a dissolution or conditioning step runs the same way every time.

Display and controls

The digital display shows speed, temperature and time. Stirring speed and temperature are set independently, and heating can be left off when only stirring is needed.

Hotplate, heater and safe operation

The working surface of the MAGD5 hotplate magnetic stirrer is a round stainless steel plate Ø175 mm, durable in daily laboratory use and easy to wipe clean. The 800 W heater sits under the plate, and the 15 W brushless DC motor drives the magnetic coupling.

After heating, a residual heat warning shows that the plate is still hot, and an overheating safety lock protects the instrument. The MAGD5 runs on AC 220 V ±10 %, 50/60 Hz, measures 330 × 190 × 130 mm and weighs 7 kg gross; the package measures 430 × 330 × 230 mm.

Applications and operational value

In the preparation of buffers, reagents and culture media, the MAGD5 hotplate magnetic stirrer heats and mixes in one step. The Ø175 mm plate carries larger beakers and bottles, and the brushless drive keeps up to 10 L homogeneous while salts and reagents dissolve. With the timer, a dissolution step takes the same time from batch to batch.

In analytical and QC laboratories, the MAGD5 serves routine mixing and sample conditioning at moderate temperatures up to 250 °C. Speed and temperature are set independently and shown on the display, so the conditions of a step are easy to repeat and record.
